The medical field is always in demand for billers, especially ones that can work out of their own home.
One thing you want to do is check out the Better Business Bureau before you start any medical billing and coding course, especially online. Many of these companies could be “Fly by night” companies or tempt you with an extravagant looking ad on their page to convince you to join, but always check how well this company is established before you make any kind of investment like this. In addition to that, there are a number of things you can check to make sure you have the right course.
1. This is common sense, but many people don’t think like this. The best medical billing classes are taught by people who are either business owners in the field of medical billing, medical coders or have some background in the field of medical billing. Why would you go anywhere that offers degrees in Zoology and Horticulture in addition, when a focused Medical Billing school will give you exactly what you need? If you take a school that does run the gamut of majors, you may not get the devoted training you will need to be successful in Medical Billing.
What exactly are the seven items?
I. Intro to Office Procedures and Medical Billing.
II. Code Usage, or how to understand codes.
III. Documents – how to comprehend office forms.
IV. Understanding the Software – how to use Practice Management Software
V. Standard Procedures in Medical Billing.
VI. Insurance Claim Forms Billing and Reimbursement
VII. Proper Marketing Procedures for your Medical Billing Business.
Any course of study that doesn’t include all seven of these is not worth your time. Anything over might be just padding to increase their tuition cost to you.
2. A Medical Billing Course should not be too long nor should it be too short. By this, I mean it shouldn’t take you less than 9 months or more than 2 years unless you have additional fields of study, including healthcare management or if they’re including medical coding in the course. In those cases, your study might take longer. Of course, if you are only devoting a small amount of time to medical billing, it will take a lot longer. Medical billing, like any other subject, requires a little bit of dedication to complete. On the flip side, you will not get the training you need, and learn the seven essential aspects of doing medical billing as a business if your classes are just a couple of seminars or a course of a few weeks. Find out how long the classes are and ask yourself “is it reasonable?”.
3. Watch the cost! If a medical billing course costs you $5,000, the college offering it is laughing all the way to the bank! Do not let this happen. A good medical course should run you $500 to $700 if all they’re going to teach you is medical billing. If the course of study includes being able to do medical coding nationally or medical transcribing, the course could run you up to $2,500, but that leads to my next point.
4. Always shop around before making a decision. This is no surprise at all! You need to look around the schools and find out what is offered, what the cost is and what is covered. Cheaper is not necessarily better, but you also don’t want to get taken to the cleaners in the process of finding a good medical billing school. Be sure you talk to alumni from schools who have taken the course, and find out the quality of the instruction, and what you get for your money before making any kind of commitment. Remember: the medical billing schools are YOUR employees. You pay them to teach you. Any school that refuses to let you talk to any of their former students or students from another medical billing center should not be considered at all. This is a very dangerous situation and you don’t want to get caught in it!
5. Know what is required and how to avoid being scammed! If the job offer is in the Pennysaver, or you can get the software off of Ebay, or on the internet or in business magazines, chances are you’re being taken for a ride. Often you’ll see a company that tries to get you to spend upwards of $4,000 for stuff like software and lists of doctors, or they’ll sell you “Bare bones” software that really doesn’t do much then they charge you for an upgrade, or they’ll offer you a discount if you do the coding through them, which hits you twice. 4 out of 5 people will make bad choices in medical billing programs because they don’t know what to look for exactly or what is required of them. You need to be able to know four things in depth: Industry coding for any medical procedure, the proper medical terminology, anatomy, and lastly, knowing how to complete all the forms.
But how can you be sure you won’t get scammed? There are many online forums that are devoted to the subject of medical billing, including what schools are the best value for your money. You can visit any of the vast number of forums and find out what software and schools are worth your time and money.
6. When you do decide to pay, make sure your course has multiple payment options, including installment pays. Everyone has a different financial position, yours should always be taken into account.
7. Lastly, make sure they DON’T promise to certify you. Medical billing schools have no legal right to certify you, you have to go through one of only three organizations to become certified and their tests are long and arduous. Also, online courses should be at your own pace. People will learn differently, the program should be tailored to you.
In conclusion, remember that the right medical billing courses can give you a lucrative career while working from home in your spare time. But know that since medical billing is in such high demand how to avoid pitfalls and traps. It’s your money, put it to work so you can be put to work.
